This essay offers a close reading of horror films from three very different periods of the genre's history-- Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Haunting, and Scream--to demonstrate how these films represent queer desire as monstrous, disruptive and violent. It comes after reports that the alleged shooter, who left England as a boy, made victims state their religion before gunning them down. Another legendary Irish monster is the Dullahan, a name that can be translated to “dark man.” Often portrayed in contemporary fantasy fiction and video games, this foreteller of death is the Irish version of the headless horseman.

This is a wildly forgotten about film that Harlin should be milking considering his career has nose-dived over the last few years. It was used in Ireland by Catholics in Ulster Province as a derogatory term to describe the Protestant Planters. You can certainly see the influence of Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” in this story, but I honestly didn’t think of that when writing it. And they’re not funny because they’re not true. Griffin administers a drug that will make Geoffrey invisible for his investigation, but unknown to him, the drug has debilitating side-effects and the Dr. hopes to develop an antidote before he goes insane.

Why It Couldn’t Be Made Anywhere Else: It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Mike Leigh, who grew up the son of a midwife, making a film this personal. The beginning of understanding is to realize that.
